Tithe

Tithe (The Modern Faerie Tales, #1)

Author: Holly Black
Pages:331

Welcome to
the realm of
very scary
faeries!
Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother's rock band until an ominous attack forces the sixteen-year-old back to her childhood home.
Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms -- a struggle that could very well mean her death.

Alright so I'm really worried that the next book I read will have to be horrendously horrible because the last two books I've devoured..well they have both been fantastic. Tithe managed to sneak its way onto the list of "Caitlin's Most Prized" having said that this book will forever be pushed at my friends until they succumb to my will and read it. This is the only Holly Black book I have ever read well its safe to say I love Holly Black now. Tithe is just brilliant one I love the setting the Jersey Shore, the boardwalk, the grunge its all freaking mesmerizing. Two I love the characters Kaye is just vivid I was able to picture her instantly and more importantly I was able to relate to her even faster. Corny well his creepiness slithered right off the page that is for certain. I'm not sure how I feel about him just now...his vibe is well mixed. I still feel an odd fondness for him though he's broken I get that. Roiben for a few chapters I was just picturing Orlando Bloom from Lord of The Rings, but then Roiben came into his own. He is fierce and every time he had to do some unspeakable act my heart broke for him. The power struggle in this story kind of reminded of Wicked Lovely don't get me wrong I read and loved the first two books in that series, but I just rate this book above them both. The worlds are kind of similar but then vastly different. The fairy court issues are present in Tithe though much like they are in the Wicked Lovely books. Kaye's story just really did it for me when she was embarrassed or hurt I felt it the emotions were really strong. I suppose the story was raw in a way so many stories are polished and the authors won't allow the characters to much embarrassment...that is not true with Holly Black Kaye was plenty embarrassed loads of embarrassed even. I mean fairy stories are really all sort of similar from what I've experienced, but then again vampire stories and werewolf stories are seldom very different from one another either. I just flat out loved this story when someone asks for a recommendation this one is getting shoved at them..along with my other newly discovered favorite The Demon's Lexicon.

I LOVE this book! Well, actually the entire series is great! Holly Black is by far one of my favorite authors and I can't wait for her new book White Cat to come out, it's going to be great!

Great review and keep up the great "book pushing"!

You're so right about the similarities with Melissa Marr's series. But I agree this one is better written. And resonates with me more.

I'm anxious to hear what you think of Corny after finishing IRONSIDE. :)

Sweet! I loved the first two books in this series when I read them, too.... I think I read them back in 2006, if you can believe that? I really need to just go borrow IRONSIDE from the library and find out how it ends.
