City of Ashes

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments #2)

Author-Cassandra Clare
Pages-453

Description courtesy of Goodreads

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go -- especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil -- and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings -- and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation

Rated 5 on a scale of 1-5

I am greatly enjoying the Mortal Instruments series. I think that City of Bones really hooks you, and you just can't wait to keep reading. I find that its only getting better now that I have read City of Ashes. I am extremely excited to read City of Glass in the Holiday Reading Challenge. In this book I found that the characters grew, and changed for the better. Everything was just improved. I mean the first book was great, but its always wonderful when the series gets better with time. In this story Jace went through a lot, and I felt like I went on the emotional journey with him. Cassandra just has the ability to make you feel compassion for her characters. You truly feel like you can relate to them and share in their joys and suffering. She also introduced new characters you come to love such as The Inquisitor and Maia. I also felt like we got to learn more about the world the characters live in. You get to explore the Fey world, and you get to meet the fairy Queen. Cassandra also shed some more light on Maryse and I loved that. I feel like Clary is growing as a Shadowhunter to and really coming into her own, and I like that her relationship with Luke is becoming stronger. The story in the 2nd book in my opinion was just as gripping as the first installment. I really liked the plot flow, and how she introduced new characters, and is developing the relationship between Clary and Jace magically. Speaking of magic I love Magnus Bane the warlock he is becoming quite useful, and he is hilarious. He seems like he has several dimensions to his personality. I feel there is a lot more to him than he lets on most of the time. I feel like it was a strong follow up book, and it definitely leaves you wanting to know more.

I am going to have to get this series. It sounds really good. I have heard from a few people that it was good, but I have just not been able to get there. I am going to have to sneak it in on the stack here sooner than later.

Thanks for the great review!
