The king's scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king's prison. The magus is interested only in the thief's abilities.
What Gen is interested in is anyone's guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.First of all I would like to say I was just reading along happily as could be, and BOOM twists and turns came out of nowhere, and I found myself thinking well duh! Why didn't I see that coming, and its plain as day am I stupid. Megan Whalen Turner sure did fool me I thought I was reading a happy little tale about a poor little thief rescued from the dungeon to do his kings bidding. Well you can find out for yourself how that one turns out, but keep an eye out for twists. I became attached to Gen the main character instantly. The thoughts going through his head and his hilarious observations of the side characters had me rolling. I had no idea what to think of the Magus the man dragging Gen to find The Gift. I was convinced something was up with him for a long time. I liked Sophos despite him being so royal and powerful he was the nicest to Gen. The stories they told about the Earth and the Sky gods were just as entertaining as the actual story. The setting of the story just sounded like well a fairytale imagine that. It took me a few pages to keep everyones name straight, and to figure out what kingdom they were talking about, but trust me that didn't take away from the exciting tale. This story really laid the groundwork for the rest of the books. Gen is a likable guy, and he makes you laugh, and to me I felt like we were sharing inside jokes and making fun of the other characters of the story. I'm going to bug my Dad till he reads this book, and anyone else I can think of that might even sort of like it. I can't wait to read The Queen of Attolia (The Queen's Thief 2) and I can tell you now every other book in the series.

This sounds like a great book. I enjoy books where you really come to care for the main character. The beginning sounds a little like Poison Study. Thanks for the review!
I read this book at the library a while ago and I think I went through 4 pages and stopped. By the sounds of your review I should have read the whole thing because I like to connect with the characters. I'll have to borrow it next time ;]

I always love twists and turns in a book. This sounds like they are well done with great characters as well. I think I am going to have to get this book. Thanks for the great review!
